3 Ways to Pray for our Leaders

Do you ever want to pray, but don’t know what to pray?

1 Timothy 2:1-2 urges “that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people –for kings and all those in authority…”

Our national leaders need prayer. Think of all that they presently face –issues surrounding refugees, massacres, racial injustice, terrorism, abortion, and their own personal life and family. These are just to name a few.

First, let’s pray that our governing authorities know Christ as their Savior. 1 Timothy 2:4 says that God desires all people to be saved. We can pray that governing authorities hear the good news that Christ came to save us from our sins and recognize their immediate and eternal need for Him.

Second, we can pray God gives them wisdom. James 3:14-17 describes wisdom that comes from God as “pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.” Pray that God surrounds our president and presidential candidates with this kind of godly counsel.

Third, pray for God to use our leaders for His purposes. Proverbs 21:1 says, “In the LORD’s hand the king’s heart is a stream of water that he channels toward all who please him.” God is able to change the heart of our leaders in order to accomplish His plans. We admit that we do not fully understand or know the purposes of God, but we do know that his purposes are better and greater than our own. Whether we agree or even voted for our national leaders, we are called to pray.
