An Empathizing Friend is Hard to Find

A&E, the cable channel, produces a program called Fit to Fat to Fit where the fit trainer gains weight so that he can identify with his client while they both work to shed their extra pounds.  Why would an in shape person who obviously cares about his health agree to gain weight just to help someone else meet their weight loss goal?  Ok, I am sure part of it is money, but the trainer believes that his client can be more successful if they work together to meet the same goal.  The trainer empathizes with his client because the trainer has to overcome temptations like the client while on their weight loss journey.

In the same fashion, during Jesus’ time on earth, He was tempted in every way, just like we are, but able to overcome. Hebrews 4:13 says “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet He did not sin.”  So maybe your issue is not losing weight, but you struggle with lying, cursing, smoking, drinking or having sex with your boyfriend. When you reach out to your friends for support, especially ones who have not dealt with your situation, it can be frustrating when they don’t know how to help.

Just like the trainer on Fit to Fat to Fit can identify with their client, Jesus understands how hard it is to overcome temptation. So when you are struggling with making the right decision, reach out to Jesus.  He will be there with you every step of the way.
