Domestic Violence is Not Bias

During the month of October, we turn our attention to the topic of domestic violence. Sadly, even in the church, we find that many relationships have been soiled by the pain and trauma of domestic violence. The holy Scripture unequivocally condemns violence and considers it “detestable to the Lord” (Psalm 11, Proverbs 3 & 10).

Dear woman, girl, man, boy, please remember that violence is not acceptable in any kind of relationship. Unfortunately, some people believe, “he only hits me because he loves me” or “if I wasn’t so bad and pushed his buttons, he would not have struck me.”

Whether involving a spouse, boyfriend or girlfriend, domestic violence is often about exploitation and exerting power and control over the one the abuser claims to love. Domestic violence takes on many forms, such as physical abuse, verbal abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, or financial abuse (controlling funds to deprive the abused from meeting personal and familial needs).

If you are a member of a local church, please remember that church members are not immune. Pay attention to families that appear to be struggling including persons who regularly appear in church with varying physical injuries or who appear emotionally fragile. Victims of domestic violence must be protected and fostered in a safe and nurturing environment. This can only occur if we in the church have lasting and meaningful relationships with each other.
