Let’s go back to the story of our “sister” Tamar in Part 1. King David had power as the “local authority” to punish Tamar’s rapist, but David did nothing to defend his own daughter. The Bible describes David as a man after God’s own heart. So then, does God still have a heart for women in spite of David?

As a Christian woman I struggle with the treatment of women in the Bible. I get that women suffer because of the trickle-down effect of disobeying God. But I search the Bible for a statement that says that God condemned the unjust actions of men when they abused or mistreated women. The verse I look to is Genesis 1:26-28:

Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, after our likeness, so they may rule…over all the creatures that move on the earth.”

27 God created humankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them,
male and female he created them.

28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply! Fill the earth and subdue it!… (NET)

These verses embody God’s unchanged intent for women. God created hu-womanity in His image. God gave hu-womanity equal rule over the earth. God is talking about us too, y’all.

Why is this important?

Humankind messed up, and we have to endure the consequences as God works His plan to bring us back into right relationship with Him. The fact that God is working through our sin does not mean that He endorses it. Look to His intent to understand our place, which should empower us to walk in the knowledge of our equality before God. This means if anybody violates you because of his sinfulness, it is just that—a violation not to be accepted by an equal being, but REPORTED!

So report his butt!
