How to do Freedom
Freedom means different things to different people. The definition of freedom is having the opportunity to live the life you want. If I were to sum up what freedom is, it would be liberating yourself from other people’s expectations. Freedom is living life without any oppression. Freedom is the absence of fear.
As followers of Christ, our definition of freedom is not the same as the world’s. There are laws put into place that we must follow. Galatians 5:13-14 helps me gain a better understanding of freedom. It states, “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (NIV) That Scripture taught me that the true definition of freedom is to serve. Freedom is not a selfish act, but a selfless act. To have true freedom is to care for those around you. These last weeks have been tough and troubling for most people: from the horrific virus killing thousands of people around the world to the race riots going on across the country. As followers of Christ, we need to come together now more than ever. We need to encourage the discouraged and share our faith with the lost. We need to serve each other.
As Christians, we are to follow the laws God has given us. We need to study the Bible and actually do what we learned. James 1:25: “But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it-not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.” A song that has been encouraging to me at the moment is “Better” by Jessica Reedy. I believe the only way that it will get better is if we believe, trust God, and serve others.
