Do I have what it takes to be successful?

AM I ENOUGH? This question, whether spoken or unspoken, lingers in a girl’s mind when applying to colleges, waiting for the results of a job interview, or for a direct message (DM) from that cute guy she met. In a society that promotes judgmentalism, it is hard to avoid the cloud of insecurity. There are all sorts of battles and competitions on television, not to mention the reality shows, the survivor shows, and the matchmaking shows. There are dating apps that encourage swipes. There are social media apps that promote likes, friends and subscribers. Then there’s TikTok!

To you, it may not seem as though you have what it takes. Life might be a bit harder for you than for others, but that does not mean you are any less than anyone else. It might seem as though everyone around you is advancing effortlessly. They might appear to always have it together, but the truth is, each of us is a work in progress.

When I was a pre-med student at Howard University, I failed Inorganic Chemistry. I was devastated because I had never failed a class in my life. My friends moved on with their A’s and B’s and I sat in the sorrow of my failure feeling insufficient and inadequate. At that point, I had a decision to make. Sit there and pout or get up and keep moving in the direction of my destiny. It was not easy, but I picked myself up, retook the class, got help from tutors, and passed it. Then, I changed my major to psychology! That experience was what I needed to help me get on the right road.

So, let me answer the question emphatically. Yes, YOU ARE ENOUGH! You have been “fearfully and wonderfully” made by God. You have everything inside of you that is necessary to fulfill your purpose, but here is the kicker, you have to believe it. Psalm 139:14 says, “I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well” (NASB). Please believe and know for sure that you are strong enough, you are capable enough, and you have what it takes to fulfill the destiny God designed for your life. It doesn’t matter if it takes you longer, if you have to take a winding trail to get there, or if you don’t look like everyone else while on the journey.

When it gets hard, check and make sure that what you are endeavoring to do is what the Lord wants you to do. Simply pray and ask God, “Is this your will for me?” If you are at peace with it, then ask God, “Is this the right time for me to do this?”, “How should I do it?”, and “Who can help me with it?” If you are on the wrong road, ask the Lord to show You His will. Then, go for it! YOU ARE ENOUGH!
