We Really Trust Politicians

I don’t know about you but I wish I knew more about politics than I do. With so many other things vying for our attention, why care? At the same time, how can we lay our heads on a pillow every night in a country and not care about who governs it and how they govern it? Regardless of what we do, the world continues to spin.

Why bother keeping up with what’s going on inside of the Beltway and blogging our deepest convictions on an issue when none of it makes a difference? Instead we subjugate ourselves to the whims of others because we feeling little power to affect the flow. However, the fact that change does happen should encourage us to be politically aware.

Perhaps we pay little attention because we assume the people in power are sane and care about everybody. We figure the America we know will not turn out like countries that had leaders who killed millions of people. That may be an extreme example but we assume all is good in our country or we would try harder to pay attention.

This reminds me of when Jesus is challenged about paying taxes to Caesar (the government of that time). He says “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.” (Matthew 22:21) Before we lay our heads on our pillows tonight we should figure out how to take responsibility as a citizen of this country and of God’s earth.
