Freedom!

Freedom has different meanings to different people. This nation started as many Europeans fled the rigid rules of their home countries to find a place where they could make their own decisions and act upon them. A lot of our freedoms as African Americans came after long brutal fights to gain the rights that whites always had. June even commemorates the Emancipation Proclamation. Even though we received freedom many months before, we still acted like we were slaves because no one told us we were free. There are many things that hold us in bondage even today: debt, need for love and approval from others, worry and fear are some examples. What do I mean that they are holding us in bondage? They are stopping us from being able to live our life to the fullest. Jesus says in John 10:10 “The thief [Satan] comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” So what is the secret to a free life? It’s not easy. There are times where I fall into the bondage of worry. I wake up at night worried about something that is going on at work, something I did not even realize was bothering me. I have to then stop, and ask God to take care of it. Once I ask for God’s help and trust He will help me find a solution, I have a wonderful sense of peace that allows me to sleep soundly the rest of the night. I am free always, as God is always there to handle my worries, but sometimes I choose to take on the bondage of worry as I try to solve all my problems myself. God has a bigger plan for me. He wants me to rely on Him and live free.
