A College Secret

It is finally Friday night and after a long week of classes, papers, homework and studying, you and a group of friends cannot wait to hit the parties. Since you just rolled out of bed this past week, barely taking the time to brush your teeth and hair before class, you decide that you need to really look good tonight.

The time you have taken on your appearance pays off and you and your group of friends have no problems getting into every party you go to on campus. At this one party, you are greeted with a selection of alcohol and a group of guys take you each by the hand and lead you to separate areas of the party pretending to get to know you better. So focused on the attention you are receiving, you lose sight of each other. After a little while, you notice one of your friends slightly disoriented, and disheveled, running out of the door in tears. You race after her trying to understand what happened, only to learn that she has been raped. You beg her to report it, but she is afraid no one will listen and everyone will turn against her. So following her request, you do not mention the incident again.

Sexual assault on college campuses is starting to get some long overdue attention as many college campuses are deciding to acknowledge and address the issue instead of sweeping it under the rug concerned only about a bad reputation. This month gaL will spend time discussing sexual assault as April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM).

For He will deliver the needy who cry out,
the afflicted who have no one to help.
Psalm 72:12
