You are Unique

I noticed the sign on the wall as I was huffing and puffing on the elliptical machine in the gym.  The sign simply read “You are unique”.  An interesting reminder to the people trying to stay or get in shape.   I wondered what promoted someone to hang it on the wall in the first place.

At the gym people are all shapes and sizes.  While there, I overheard a potential new member talking to a gym representative.  She explained to him that she was considering joining the gym because people were telling her they didn’t understand why she was overweight and out of shape. It was “easy” to be in shape and they couldn’t understand her lack of self-control.  She continued by saying that those negative comments were pushing her to get in shape, not for them, but for her.  I felt sorry for her because she struggled to believe in her own self worth.

Even though I didn’t join in their conversation, I thought about the sign.  What may be easy for one is hard for another.  Sometimes we wonder why me?  But God knows why because He made you unique, one of a kind.  He did it on purpose.  He took time before you were born to think about you, create you, and even consider your frizzy hair and your pear shaped body.  And He made you wonderful.

Psalm 139:13-14

For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
