Taste It Again For the First Time
Years ago I fell in love with a Kellogg’s Cornflakes ad, “Taste them again for the first time.” With the surge in competing brands the Kellogg’s Cornflakes was losing its dominance in the family pantry so the ad was meant to rekindle the interest of consumers. Even now as I write my olfactory memory is busy transmitting whiffs of the yellow crunchy flakes dancing happily as the steaming hot milk poured into the bowl for just the right sogginess. Kellogg’s corn flakes were what I requested when I was sick. It was comfort food on a rainy day. But over the years as I became a young adult and parent, trying to make ends meet, I forgot about Kellogg’s Cornflakes. I gravitated to the less popular low cost brands, where the flakes got soggy too fast or stubbornly resisted the inviting liquid. In my disappointment and frustration I gave up on cornflakes. Until I saw the ad. “Taste them again for the first time.”
As we begin a New Year we are often bombarded with making new resolutions. We devise all sorts of plans to make a fresh start with one thing or another. But have you even stopped to consider the value of things that have been left unfinished or forgotten?
There are some things that are worth going back to. Remember that manuscript still waiting to be published? The song or dance the world has never seen? The call that still needs to be made to rekindle a relationship with a family member? Maybe it is the wonder of a little girl staring in awe at the beautiful stained glass image of Jesus on the cross. Remember how He captured your heart? Maybe it’s not a New Start we need…but a Start Over.
“But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.” Revelation 2:4 ESV
