Can We Just Be Friends?
There was a song I used to like about a woman who was friends with a man who would share with her story after story about his failed relationships. The whole time she listened, like a good friend should, she longed to be the object of his adoration. Finally at the end of the song he realizes that she was the woman he should have loved all along. How romantic, right?
Generally speaking, however, friendships with the opposite sex are difficult. We build friendships with guys who share our likes and dislikes. They laugh at the same things we laugh at. They listen for hours to our dreams. Sooner or later we fall for them. If the feelings are not mutual, they become the bearers of bad news. The friendship becomes a sticky situation that eventually dissolves into nothing.
Sometimes, however, we bury our hurt feelings when the guys we like never show signs of mutual affection. And we continue to wait like the woman in the song.
In the same way God longs for your heart. God loves you even when you do not show signs of mutual affection. He is the One who listens to you as you fall in love with everything but Him while He patiently waits for you to make Him the object of your adoration. Maybe one day you’ll realize…
…God so loved the world that He gave His only son that whosoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
