“The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”–which means, “God with us.” Matthew 1:23

The world is currently watching and waiting anxiously for the fourth in line to the British throne to be born. The British royal couple recently announced the upcoming birth of their second child. The expecting Duchess has people dedicated to care for her every need while she is carrying this precious child. Once this child is born, the parents will make a few public appearances, but will remain mainly in the castle to raise their children in seclusion, unapproachable, out of touch with the average, everyday person.

How different is Jesus’ birth from the British royalty. Jesus came to be a close to us, accessible, to develop a relationship with the people, to transform our lives, to be with us. How do we know? Jesus, our King of kings, was born in a lowly, drab, smelly stable, not even granted the comforts of an inn. From birth, He was being prepared to identify with the majority of the people, not just the wealthy. Over His lifetime, He went out of His way to offer hope to as many people as He could, including the sick, the untouchable people, and the outcasts of society.

What a gift Jesus is to us. Jesus has a message of hope for you and me today. Unlike the British royal couple who live sheltered from the general public, we have a King who seeks us out, who is available at all times while we are still in our smelly mess. He is just a prayer away.
