A Connection to Our Life’s Purpose
One of my favorite scriptures comes from the book of Habakkuk. Habakkuk complains to the Lord about how bad the people are around him. God responds that He is going to send the nation’s enemies to conquer them. That doesn’t excite Habakkuk at all. He presents his next complaint to the Lord and waits for the Lord’s response. “Then the LORD said to me, ‘Write my answer plainly on tablets, so that a runner can carry the correct message to others’” (NLT).
Taking a lesson from Habakkuk, we see that God is able to communicate clearly the direction He wants us to take. Choosing a career is often difficult as we are inundated with a variety of choices and options. Many of us choose our careers because of our interests and tastes. Some follow in the footsteps of our parents without much thought. What we may not realize, however, is God can guide us in making difficult decisions about what we are going to do with our lives.
Psalm 46:10a says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” Be still simply means to stop and listen to God as He speaks to us through reading the Bible, godly advice, and prayer. Always remember, a calling connects us to our purpose in all areas of our lives. It empowers us to lend our talents and gifts to improve the lives of others. If we slow down and ask God to show us what He wants us to do, He can give us guidance and clarity for our calling just like He responded to Habakkuk.
