Many Cultures, One Love pt. 2
Sadly, in May 2022, as we celebrate AAPI Heritage Month, there has been an increase in hostility towards Asian Americans, stemming from the Covid-19 pandemic. Between March and December of 2020, numerous complaints were reported to Stop AAPI Hate. This organization monitors racist encounters against Asian Americans, and regrettably, reported a significant increase in physical and verbal attacks directed towards Asian Americans since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Many of us love the biblical story of the Good Samaritan. If you encounter anti-Asian sentiment in your church or community, think of the good Samaritan. The Samaritan saw a man in need of his aide and help. He demonstrated love, compassion, and mercy by tending to the injured man’s wounds and then ensured the injured man received treatment to further assist his healing. What this means for us, is that we must reach out to our Asian neighbors and ask them how we can help if they are the victim of violence or discrimination, and then follow through to ensure appropriate actions. Also, take the opportunity to learn about Asian cultures that you may not be familiar with. The more you find out, the more you will realize that we are more alike than we are different. But learn to appreciate the differences and celebrate the unique tapestry that weaves and knits us together. In truth, we should be doing this for everyone in the community. It is what God requires! Happy AAPI Heritage Month.
