The Light of the World, the Real Illuminator
“Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. He who follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” (John 8:12).
During the Christmas season, I think of the light of Christ. “Light” is often described as, “the phenomenon that makes vision happen.” Light eviscerates darkness. Light provides clarity so that we may perceive our surrounding reality. The message presented to us in the above-referenced scripture speaks of the light of divine godly presence and the light of truth. Those who understand and perceive the true Light of Jesus the Christ, will never live in spiritual darkness.
We turn on a light in a room to dispel or drive away the darkness. Similarly, the Light of Jesus Christ must be taken into the hearts of humankind, to dispel the darkness of sin and dysfunction. Physical light is necessary for physical life. Nearly all living things require light in order to survive. In order to navigate the pitfalls of spiritual darkness, we must embrace the light of Christ so that we are not consumed by the sinful entrapments of this world and so that we can see clearly with godly vision.
Jesus gives us clarity to dispel the darkness. Clarity to treat our spouses, neighbors, enemies, and children with love. Clarity to look at ourselves not by our worse sin, but as new creations in Christ-Jesus. During this Christmas and holiday season, remember, the Christ-child that we sing about, is truly the living Lord. Jesus is the embodiment of light and love. Walk in His light.
