How Soon is Too Soon?
In a couple of recent conversations, the same question kept coming up. “When should a guy meet the family?” If neither party is hiding behind a game, after your preliminary assessment, why not involve the family. The reason the guy next door works out so well is because we know each other’s people. So the guy you like didn’t grow up next door but your people still need to be a part of your assessment committee. Meeting his family is a part of really meeting him.
Exactly when should this guy meet the family? Think about this…
people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God. John 3:20, 21
This passage actually addresses our response to God in light of our actions. We run from God to continue our rebellion. Of course we don’t process it exactly like that. If we want God to give us a twice over because we want truth in our lives, we’ll embrace Him.
If your guy is the real thing, he won’t mind a twice over by your family. He should also want to introduce you to his. Ask! How soon is too soon? How soon is too soon to embrace God?
