An Undivided Heart

College was filled with so many distractions for me. I wanted to follow Christ but it was hard not to become distracted by the busy-ness of life. Eventually, I started to pray a simple prayer out of Psalm 86:11.

“Teach me your way, LORD, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart…”

After college, I realized distractions are like the thorns of life. I know a husband and wife who once experienced a pretty thorny situation. Early in their marriage, the husband had an emotional affair with another woman. Nothing ever escalated past the office space, but when it became apparent that he was distracted and giving his heart to someone other than his wife, he quit his job and he and his wife sought counseling. Now, that’s a good man.

Sometimes though, like the husband, we become distracted by our own desires and other people or things become our focus. Desiring the attention of a man, wanting to please others, coveting money, clothes, cars –all of these desires will entice and distract us if we allow them. Eventually, we start to chase after these things, instead of committing our hearts to One who created us.

God’s undivided heart is committed to us in spite of our various dysfunctions. Marriage was meant to show the beautiful reality of Christ’s unwavering commitment to the people who put their trust in Him, His bride, the Church. When we follow Christ, we also commit to be His alone.

Is your heart feeling distracted? Ask the Lord to teach you about Himself. The more you know Him, the more you will trust His faithfulness toward you, and the more you’ll love Him with an undivided heart.
